It’s Turtle Time!

Posted on: June 9, 2011

Have you been to the beach lately? If you have, you might have noticed the telltale sign of the start of summer… fresh turtle tracks! Seems like sea turtle season has started!

Here in Brevard County, we are fortunate to have some of the world’s best beaches for sea turtle nesting. Sea turtle nesting season in Brevard County is from May 1 – October 31. During this time, we have the amazing opportunity to catch a glimpse of a mama sea turtle coming onto the beach to lay her eggs, or maybe we might catch the sight of some new hatchlings making a mad dash towards the wide open ocean.  A few different turtles come ashore to nest on our beaches, including loggerhead sea turtles, green sea turtles, and leatherback sea turtles. It is a truly remarkable experience to see these huge creatures lug themselves up the beach to dig their nest and then lay their eggs.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to see this yet, there are a couple of organizations in our area that host sea turtle walks for the public. These group walks are led by experienced, specially trained guides who understand how to observe the turtles without disturbing them. To make a reservation for a turtle walk, you can call either the Sea Turtle Preservation Society at 321-676-1701 or the Barrier Island Sanctuary at 321-723-3556.

During turtle nesting season, it is important that we do our best not to disturb the mothers or the hatchlings. We want to remember to keep our lights out if we live on the beach to minimize disruption to the mothers and disorientation for the hatchlings. We also want to make sure we are keeping our beaches clear, clean and litter free, including any chairs or umbrellas that might be left out on the beach at night. If you come across a turtle on the beach at night, stay quiet and still, and avoid interaction and taking photographs.

Hopefully you will get a chance to experience one of nature’s most fascinating journeys at some point during the 2011 turtle season!
