Labor Day in Melbourne Beach, FL!

Posted on: September 5, 2011

So it’s Labor Day, you have the day off, and you are thinking, “What should I do with my free day?”. If you are here in Brevard County, you have plenty of exciting options!

Here is my “Top 10” list of suggestions for outdoor fun, “things to do” in the Melbourne-area on Labor Day:

1. Enjoy the Beach! Brevard County is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, and right now, the water temperatures are absolutely perfect! From Cape Canaveral to Melbourne Beach, there are many options for public beach access.

2. Check out the NKF Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach The competition starts at 8am on the final day of the festival. There is also live music, free poster signings by professional surfers, a karate demo, and much more. All activities take place at the Cocoa Beach Pier.

3. Enter the Sharks Labor Day 5K Run/Walk  This 3.1 mile run/walk starts at 7:30 am at the Sebastian Municipal Golf Course. Money raised goes to the Sebastian River Boys and Girls Cross County teams.

4. Visit the Brevard Zoo The Brevard Zoo is located on Wickham Road (all the way out by I-95) and offers so many amazing attractions! You can feed a giraffe, visit the aviary and feed the lorikeets, throw food to the fish and the birds, and experience the feeding of the zoo’s alligators and crocodiles!

5. Take a Stroll Through Historic Downtown Melbourne This charming historic district offers a variety of antique stores, boutiques, restaurants and pubs, bakeries and wine shops, plus several art galleries. Downtown Melbourne is a great place to have lunch, then do a little shopping!

6. Rent a Stand Up Paddle Board Stand up paddle boarding has been gaining in popularity over the past several years, and for good reason… it is easy to learn, enjoyable to do, and it is a great form of exercise! You can paddle board in the ocean, the river, or any one of Brevard County’s beautiful lakes. I’m sure there are many places around Brevard County to rent a stand up paddle board for the day, but the two that I know of off-hand are Catalyst Surf Shop on Ocean Ave in Melbourne Beach, and Longboard House on the corner of 5th Ave and A1A in Indialantic.

7. Tour the Barrier Island Sanctuary in Melbourne Beach This oceanfront facility is an educational center located in the heart of the Archie Carr Refuge, which is a major nesting site for sea turtles. The center features examples of several barrier island habitats, as well as a unique interpretive hiking trail which weaves through a cross section of all the barrier island habitats. The center also has a large oceanfront deck and a wonderful gift shop.

8. Spend the Day at Sebastian Inlet State Park Located at the southern tip of Brevard County, Sebastian Inlet State Park offers pristine beaches, a protected swimming cove, fishing, boating, hiking, and so much more. You can even rent a canoe or kayak from the Inlet Marina and explore the islands of the Indian River, or the mangrove-lined shoreline.

9. Experience an Air Boat Ride More of a “wildlife adventure” than just a boat ride, you will experience plenty of Florida wildlife including many types of birds and maybe even an alligator or two! There are a few different locations in Brevard County that offer air boat rides, but the only one I have experienced was at Lone Cabbage Fish Camp on SR520 in Cocoa… lots of fun!

10. Shop and Dine at Historic Cocoa Village Located on the Indian River, Cocoa Village is a section of tree-lined streets with unique shops and boutiques, and some of the best restaurants in Brevard County. Spend the afternoon browsing through the stores, then stop and have dinner at one of the many amazing restaurants!
