Is your Brevard County, Florida home hurricane ready?

It’s back again, that pesky hurricane season! June 1st marks the official start of hurricane season in the Atlantic, so that means those of us in Brevard County, Florida should start thinking about preparing… Is your Brevard County, Florida home hurricane ready?

Rather than waiting until the last minute to do the “hurricane scramble”, it might be a good idea to get your home stocked, supplied, and ready before that first storm even begins to form. This means making sure you always have the following list of supplies ready and waiting in your Brevard County, Florida home:

1. Water – at least 1 gallon daily per person for at least one week, plus water for your pets!

2. Canned foods and Non-perishable packaged foods – you should have at least enough food for one week. Include throwaway eating utensils, plates, napkins. Don’t forget about special foods for any infants or babies in your home, and don’t forget about stocking enough food for your pets.

3. Blankets and pillows – have a set for each person in your home. Also prepare a pet crate/carrier and leash for your pet in case you have to leave your home.

4. Change of clothes – be ready with enough clothes to last you 3 – 5 days. You may want to include a hat and sturdy shoes as well. You can re-wear clothes if need be, but you may want to keep an extra pair of underwear or two in your hurricane supply box.

5. First Aid Kit – be ready with enough supplies to last at least one week. Remember that you will need enough medicines and prescription medicines as well, so prepare accordingly.

6. Toiletries – take all those mini hotel shampoos, soaps, etc and put them in your hurricane supply box. You may want to add some baby wipes/moist wipes and deodorant. Remember to include sunscreen and insect repellent.

7. Electronics – make sure you have flashlights and batteries, plus spare batteries for your cell phone, radio, your children’s favorite battery-operated toys, etc. You might even consider keeping a pre-paid cell phone in your hurricane supply box.

8. Money – keep enough cash on hand to last you at least one week (ATM’s won’t work if the power is out), plus credit cards

9. Entertainment – keep plenty of toys, books, and games handy. If you are stuck in your house without electricity for a few days, you will be happy you were prepared with entertainment!

10. Important documents – pack a Ziplock bag with copies of your bank account numbers, insurance information, medical records, family and emergency contact information, etc

If a storm is headed our way, be sure to secure your Brevard County, Florida home with hurricane shutters or plywood at the very least, bring in anything from your yard that could blow away, turn off propane tanks, turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings so food will last longer if the power goes out, and fill your car’s gas tank.
