Even if you have never been to Wickham Park in Melbourne, Florida, chances are you have driven by it numerous times. Conveniently located on Wickham Road, adjacent to the Melbourne Campus of Brevard Community College, Wickham Park is Melbourne’s version of New York City’s Central Park. Well, that may be a bit of a stretch, but Wickham Park in Melbourne boasts over 390 acres of wooded areas, lakes, hiking trails, playing fields, and more. Best of all, it is FREE to visit Wickham Park and enjoy all that it has to offer!
Okay, so what does Melbourne’s Wickham Park have to offer? Tons! There is something for every member of the family! The first time I visited Wickham Park, it was to play Disc Golf, otherwise known as Frisbee Golf, or Frolf. Wait, am I the only one who calls it Frolf… is that a made-up term? Hmmm, not sure… well, whatever it’s called, it is super fun to play. Wickham Park has a really nice 18-hole Frisbee Golf course with plenty of greenery, shrubs, and palmettos to add some challenge to your game, plus lots of shaded areas to escape the hot Florida sun.
The next time I visited Wickham Park it was to go rollerblading with a friend. Wickham Park has a paved, scenic 1.5 mile road that winds through the park, and is perfect for jogging, biking, and rollerblading. Once you enter the park, the paved roadway twists and turns among huge pine trees, numerous lakes, and plenty of wildlife, making Wickham Park an ideal place to exercise and just enjoy nature.
Recently, I was at Wickham Park to check out the playground, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. My son played for an hour on the swings, slides, climbing structures, and more. And bonus, it wasn’t even crowded! There are plenty of shaded benches available for parents, and lots of room for the little ones to run around in addition to the actual playground. My son was worn out after our time at the Wickham Park playground!
Melbourne’s Wickham Park has even more to offer than just Frisbee Golf, paved exercise paths, and playgrounds. Wickham Park has miles of nature trails, a quarter-mile 21 station exercise course, numerous sand volleyball courts, an archery range, horseshoe pits, ball fields, picnic areas, a huge swimming lake, plus other lakes for fishing, and more. Wickham Park has a great “off leash” dog park, with separate fenced in areas for different sized dogs. The Park offers equestrian trails, stables, and a show ring. Camping is popular at Wickham Park, with 88 camp sites offering water and electric, 25 overflow campsites, and group camping available. Wickham Park hosts various festivals and events throughout the year such as Ocktoberfest, Indiafest, Strawberry Festival, Space Coast Lightfest, Salsa Fest, Runaway Country Concert, and many more.
Wickham Park also has a beautiful Senior Center, which is available to people age 50 and over for just a $15 annual membership fee. When I took a look at the activities offered at the Wickham Park Senior Center, I was jealous I couldn’t join just yet! They have everything – card games, a variety of exercise classes, many types of dance classes, various art classes, game days, computer classes, bingo, shuffleboard, a travel office, and lots more. Check out their website to see for yourself!: Wickham Park Senior Center
Wickham Park is the largest of all the Brevard County parks, and is open from dawn until dark. Wickham Park is located at 2500 Parkway Drive, Melbourne Florida, and the phone number for the park’s office is 321-255-4307. I highly suggest checking out Wickham Park if you are looking for “Things to do in Brevard County, Florida”; it is the perfect place to spend the day – bring a picnic, bring your bathing suit, bring a soccer ball and volleyball, and let your children swim and run around, then hike the nature trails and see what kind of wildlife you can find. There is so much to do at Wickham Park, all ages will enjoy spending a day outdoors enjoying nature!
