Here’s some really exciting news for the Space Coast… The first official cargo delivery to the International Space Station is scheduled for Sunday, October 7th, via a Falcon 9 rocket that will be launched by the private rocket company, SpaceX. This is significant because it is the first contracted cargo mission to the International Space Station using a private space capsule. SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft will launch into space on top of a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 8:34 pm on Sunday, October 7th. This means that everyone on Florida’s Space Coast will get to experience a nighttime rocket launch… truly a marvelous sight to see!

Once the Dragon is launched, it will travel for three days before meeting up with the International Space Station on October 10th. When it reaches the Space Station, it will stay attached for several weeks, while the Space Station’s crew unloads the capsule and then loads it back up with cargo that will be sent back to Earth. So what types of cargo will the capsule be delivering to the Space Station, you ask? Basically, about 1,000 pounds of supplies to support the 166 different scientific investigations that are planned to take place during the station’s current expedition.

You might be thinking, wait, didn’t the Dragon capsule already meet up with the Space Station back in May? Yes, it did, but that was a demonstration mission, designed to test SpaceX’s readiness to begin its 12 such contracted flights. The success of that flight cleared the way for the contracted missions to begin. So, this flight won’t be Dragon’s first flight to the Space Station, but it will be the capsule’s first legitimate trip under the terms of the $1.6 billion NASA contract to resupply the International Space Station.

In more exciting space news, SpaceX is already working on a modified version of the Dragon capsule that could be used to transfer astronauts to and from the Space Station. This isn’t scheduled to happen until the 2015-2017 timeframe, but it definitely provides a positive outlook for the future of the space program.

Big things are happening on the Space Coast of Florida, and we are lucky that we get to live here and experience these historical moments! Remember to watch the launch on October 7th, it is sure to be spectacular, lighting up the skies over beautiful Brevard County, Florida!
